Best Breastfeeding Tricks for Breastfeeding in Public

I have found that the more comfortable I am with breastfeeding at home, the more comfortable I will be  nursing when I’m on the go.

So, some tricks I’ve used for breastfeeding in public are:

  • Practice practice practice! Get comfortable using a blanket at your own house and helping your baby navigate the breast without you having to watch exactly what she’s doing.
  • Practice in front of a mirror. While it may seem silly, the best way to learn to breastfeed your child in public is to practice in front of a mirror while feeding at home. Try different positions and different coverings. This will help you know which positions are the best for feeding without showing too much.
  • Tank top under the shirt. I’ve also found it very helpful to wear a tank top underneath my shirt so that when I position my baby to breastfeed, I’m not showing the world my back or sides.
  • Baby carrier or wrap. Another great trick for breastfeeding in public is to learn how to nurse in a baby carrier or wrap. This skill takes a little bit of time to master, but once you learn how, it is well worth it.
  • Find a secluded place. If you’re really struggling to breastfeed in public, then it’s okay to go to a secluded place. If you are a guest in someone’s house ask them where they would prefer you nurse.
  • Be polite. It’s also a good idea if you were in mixed company to ask if anyone would be uncomfortable with you nursing. It’s just common courtesy and doesn’t diminish your rights to breastfeed. It just takes other people’s feelings into consideration, which is never a bad thing. You may save yourself and someone else a lot of embarrassment.
  • Be confident. Finally my last trick for you is just to be comfortable and confident in feeding your baby. You don’t owe anyone an explanation and you should never be criticized or looked down upon for feeding your baby in public.
